Utada
20.10.05

She's one of the world's biggest musical artists, but chances are you've never heard of her. She's already sold over 20 million albums, and released her debut solo album over here on Monday. We caught up with Japanese superstar UTADA, who brought along her most prized possessions, and talked us through what makes her tick.

LAPTOP

This is the centre of everything; it’s my G4 laptop. I totally need it to do anything. This is a new one, and it was very sad when my old one died. I had to do a rescue operation and take it to this computer store where we spent six hours trying to transfer all the data while it was dying out. This one’s doing very well so far, fortunately.

KEYBOARD

This is my keyboard, which I programme a lot of things on. The first instrument I ever picked up was a piano, when I was five years old. I went to my first lesson and I couldn’t play the scale, so I cried and said I can’t do it. I’m quitting and quit. My parents never forced me into doing anything, but eventually when I was about eight I wanted to learn again. Then I stuck at it and learned classical piano for a pretty long time, until I got bored of it and just began learning chords to write music with. I also play the guitar, and write some songs on that. It’s easy to get attached to a guitar. I grew up watching my father play the guitar so there was always one in the house. It was the humming bird: so beautiful. I’m not that attached to my guitar yet; I’m more scared of losing my laptop or the data I have. I take all my equipment around the world with me, and it’s kind of a hassle to travel with because at the airport they check it like crazy. They’re so rough at the airport - they throw it around. So I have to say It’s very expensive! and then they back off a bit.

When I got married I took a one-month trip around Europe to get away from the Japanese press, and took no musical equipment with me. I thought of a song on a mountain somewhere in Southern France and there was no store of any kind near by. I really needed any kind of cheap synth keyboard I could find. So we drove back into the city just to pick up a keyboard - a really rubbishy one! - brought it back and I worked on it. That’s when I realised I can’t really get away from it.

HEADPHONES

My hearing is pretty good. I went to a friend's house one day and, when I went out through their backyard, I heard a very disturbing noise - like a high pitched piercing sound, and I said Ouch! What’s that? Everyone else was, like, What are you talking about? I was the only one going crazy and, later, my friend called me saying it must be the high frequency sound they have to keep away cats! It’s all about training, I guess. You can sharpen your sense of sight, or your hearing, anything. I spent so much time paying attention to sounds and being really anal about it that my ears got really good, I think.

I never listen too loud to my headphones. I don’t mind turning the music up in my studio because you need to, but I know some musicians - especially band members like my guitarist - that have played in loud environments so long that they can’t really hear well any more. He needs the click to be turned up like crazy. I wouldn’t want that to happen.

I went to get a medical check up a few years ago and they tested my hearing. They put some headphones on me and played high tones and low tones and told me to push a button when I heard a sound. But that one time it was really weird. I was pushing the button a lot or not pushing it at all, and the nurse came in and looked really scared. She said: Miss, I think you’re losing your hearing in your left ear. I thought Oh my god. I have to find another job! But it turned out that the machine was broken!

HARD DRIVE

There’s quite a bit of material on it - I’d say about 13 new songs are in there. If the album is a big hit, it could be worth four or five million dollars, maybe. I was thinking about the possessions I have. I’m not really into jewellery so I don’t have anything really expensive, and the only thing I thought I would be scared to have stolen is my hard drive.

I keep all my old equipment from my first Korg Triton to even that crappy keyboard I bought in the middle of nowhere in France. I have a warehouse and store it there. I did a small exhibition of my equipment with a tour I once did, along with old costumes and props from my videos. They were all put outside for the fans to view while they were waiting for the show to start. I don’t think I would want a big museum. It’s like having a big funeral. I’d say Mo, I want a humble little funeral, don’t pay too much money on me!

POWER CABLES

Electricity is important in my life now, but my dream as a kid was to be either a Manga artist or a scientist. What I do is almost like a science of sound so it's not very different from what I envisioned. I thought I'd be in a white lab coat in a laboratory all day and night with no windows. It’s kind of what I do now. Being in a studio, there’s no windows and long hours.

I think the beauty in science is that nothing is really clear at all, so you just have to study something that’s as flawed as you are. One flawed thing facing another flawed thing can be quite beautiful. Lucky accidents in my music happen a lot. I would make a mistake and turn a track into the wrong sound, but it plays back really right and I think Oh this is the sound I should have gone for from the start. So that happens, or I lose something and I have to try to remake it over and it turns out better. Having said that I would still have been a musician in an age before electricity, because the first thing I did was sing. I don’t know if I would’ve done any arrangements, but I think I would’ve been a simple singer / songwriter with a guitar or just like a piano.

I like simple things. There really isn’t that much at home that is that valuable. I’m so not attached to anything like furniture, clothes, jewellery. With other pop artists that’s their lifestyle and, if they were poor when they were kids and they wanted to be rich, that’s fine. It can be disappointing for the fans, maybe - if the music disappears into the background, but I think a lot of people balance out those two aspects nicely and they work seriously and they use the money seriously, too. I’ve never valued material possessions because I’m so used to being taken out of my environment without it being my decision. In grew up half in America and half in Japan, so my parents used to just say, Oh, we’re gonna go to Tokyo tomorrow, so pack up, and I would have to leave most of my things behind, or leave my friends behind. So it’s difficult for me to be attached to a person, even. I guess I expected to be cut off from things around me that were important, so I became a very self-contained person. I enjoy being alone very much. If I have my own room, then I’ll just go in there and be alone. I don’t really need vacations to relax. I’ll just take a bath with a good book. I really hate it when I get treated like a diva.

I’ve been going seven years, which is a long time to be working hard and not getting too introverted, thinking I’ll just do my little thing and no one look me. When I appear on a music show, I notice that everyone else - even if they’re older than me - seem to have shorter careers than I do. It’s kind of scary. I could still be doing this when I’m 40. I don’t know if I’ll be a housewife or a Madonna or both. I mean, she seems to handle the family thing and the music thing very well. Madonna doesn’t fit the mould of any other artists so you can’t really compare her. You can’t really put another name next to her. People ask me to name an artist they can compare me to very simply, like: She’s the Japanese... something. The whole point I’m making with my music is that it doesn’t fit another mould. So I’ll just have to keep on working until people know what I’m like. And then become a label someday, hopefully.
